Happy New Year!  Sharon was in DC this past weekend learning tons of new ways to make the Academy better.  We are going to be adding some fun and exciting new programs for new and existing students and the kids program as well!  I can’t wait to share them all with you, soon.

One of the great and unique things about BJJ United is our tight bond as a family.  Every person who comes through our doors is always welcomed with open arms.  They say they feel like they have been training at BJJ United for years.  It’s one of the things I am most proud of at the Academy because this is not just me, but all the great students and staff we have there training and working.  Well, I want to take this to the next level!

So stay tuned for more info.  Also, MAKE sure you are on the email list or a fan of the Facebook page because with the winter weather we need to send out quick notifications.  You can join the email list from the FB pages or on the schools front page of the website (click here to go there).

Lastly, we are starting a new referral program.  I will be announcing the perks and awards soon.  This is a great way to start off a New Year!  See you all on the mats!

Added – Kettlebells 7am on Tuesday mornings. We will see how this goes before adding more or earlier kettlebells for you early birds. Also – just to get everyone’s new year kickstarted – kettlebell classes are free the month of January. So bring your friends and family to come try out class. Every single class all month long. After January classes are only $10.00 each or get a discounted rate for bulk packages.

This year we will be handing out certificates to all the BJJ United black belts and those who have supported BJJ United over the years.  We appreciate all their hard work and dedication to the Team, Academy, Students and Training.  Thank you

One quick note about tomorrows team day:
The parking lot will be packed, arrive early to get a spot. There is street parking. Do NOT park in the lot across the street because they parking authority checks it and they will ticket you!

Only the BJJ 11:30am and 12:30pm classes are cancelled. The Team Day will start at 11:30am (so you know that means more like 12noon). Kids class, kettlebells and Muay Thai are as scheduled. If you have any questions feel free to email :

Lastly: January is FREE Kettlebell month at BJJ United. This is for any current students and people without any kettlebell experience. Every single class is free all month long. You can come to every single class too. If you have kb experience come in and take at least 2 kb classes before January 1st and you can. Beginning Jan, Tuesday 7am kb added to the schedule in 2011. Congratulations to Harvey Hensley, BJJ United‘s newest Black Belt. Harvey has been a morning class staple for many years. Harvey puts a lot of hard work and thought into his training, he’s a great teammate and wonderful person. Congratulations Harvey!

Jared to Compete on November 13th

Jared will has a super fight scheduled for the upcoming US Grappling tournament on Saturday, November 13th. The tournament will be held at Sports Extreme – 814 Conchester Highway Boothwyn, PA 19061. Click here for details.  NOTE - This tournament, as well as Jared’s Super fight will be SUBMISSION ONLY. If you’ve never been to a submission only tournament you should check it out.

Turkey Roll 2010

It’s November and that means the annual BJJU Turkey Roll is right around the corner. Mark your calendars for Friday, November 26. Open mat training will commence at noon until ??? If you’ve never been, make an effort to come. Its a great opportunity to train with some different folks while burning off some extra calories. As a reminder, all regularly scheduled classes for November 26 (morning and evening) are canceled.

Wednesday Night Competition Class

If you haven’t checked out our new Wednesday night competition class, what are you waiting for? So far there have only been a few fatalities, but seriously, its been a great training experience. All are welcome, so give it a try – Wednesdays 7 – 8:30.

BJJ United In-House Tournament

We will be holding one this winter.  The date will be announced shortly.

For those of you who weren’t able to see Wilson’s fight on Thursday night, October 21, 2010, he defeated Deividas Taurosevičius via split decision (29-28, 28-29, 29-28). It was a thrilling, hard fought and grinding battle. With his victory Wilson is guaranteed a spot in the upcoming Bellator Featherweight Tournament. Congratulations Wilson!

If you haven’t noticed, facebook has merged our various different pages for the Academy. The most recently merged can be found here. The group page can still be found at this link, but you can get updates on both.

If you have not seen the postings on Facebook you are missing out on Sharon’s kettlebell workout of the week. Information about Kettlebells and kettlebell classes can be found at www.PhiladelphiaKettlebellClass.com as well as the weekly Workout which will be posted (hopefully) every Monday. Sharon says its always better to come to class, but for those of you who cannot make it can still get a good workout at home.

There is also a Women’s Self Defense seminar coming up on November 13, 2010 from 3:00pm-6:00pm. For more information contact Sharon or check at the front desk. This is a Level 1 seminar and you must pre-register with Sharon or the front desk. Cost is $25.00 per person pre-pay or $40.00 at the door.

Due to Wilson’s Bellator fight on Thursday, the school will be closed and all regularly scheduled classes will be cancelled. All classes will resume as scheduled on Friday.

Wilson is fighting Deividas Taurosevicius as part of Bellator 33, which will be headlined by Roger Huerta vs. Eddie Alvarez. This will be a great event and Wilson deserves a huge turnout! See you there.

Coach Jared Weiner is off to the Miami Open this weekend. He has been on a tear after making his comeback to the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu tournament scene in July.
